MetroMFT is proud to collaborate with the University of Maryland’s Couple and Family Therapy Program to offer a new workshop designed to deepen clinicians’ cultural responsiveness, clinical skill, and systemic awareness. This in-service training bridges theory, research, and real-world clinical practice.

Grieving Together: Systemic Approaches to Grief Therapy

Presented by Dr. Angela Lamson

As more Medical Family Therapists (MedFTs) and Couple/ Family Therapists (CFTs) are hired into healthcare systems, the need for fully integrated, team-based models of care has become increasingly urgent—particularly in the treatment of complex and high-mortality conditions. MedFTs and CFTs are uniquely positioned to navigate the intersection of health, illness, and relational systems within primary, secondary, and tertiary care settings.

This session draws on over two decades of clinical practice, research, and implementation science to explore how a relationally centered integrated behavioral health care model can be leveraged to address the biopsychosocial and relational dimensions of high-risk medical conditions. MedFTs bring systemic assessment and family-centered interventions into collaboration with physicians, nurses, and interdisciplinary teams—enhancing patient engagement, treatment adherence, and whole-person care.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe the role of Medical Family Therapists (MedFTs) and Couple/Family Therapists (CFTs) within integrated healthcare teams and healthcare contexts.
  2. Explain how relationally centered integrated behavioral health care (RCIBH) addresses the biopsychosocial complexities of chronic and high-mortality medical conditions.
  3. Determine how to maximize family inclusion and collaboration with providers throughout joining, assessing, diagnosing, intervening, goal setting, and evaluating outcomes.
  4. Identify three ways to improve or influence current family inclusion and/or integrated care practices in your context
